The St. David's Foundation
St David's Foundation provides free palliative care in South Wales for people facing progressive life-threatening illnesses which are no longer curable.
The Foundation's history began in 1979, when Heulwen Egerton, a nurse tutor at Newport's Royal Gwent Hospital set up the 'Gwent Hospice Project Group'. The group was made up of like-minded individuals who were concerned at the lack of palliative care available to the people of Gwent.
Since 1979, when St David's cared for six patients, it has grown to become the UK's largest provider of "hospice at home" care, caring for over 2600 patients and families every year, at a cost over £4.6 million. During 2007 – 2008 33,376 hours of care were provided by St David's Hospice at Home team.
People who are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness can be referred to St. David's Foundation Hospice Care and have access to any of the services provided free of charge. The organisation supports individuals and families in Newport, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire and Torfaen.
St. David's Foundation Welfare Rights Advisors can also assist patients and their families to obtain any benefits to which they might be entitled.
